Location

The villages of Steeple Aston and Middle Aston are located within a small triangle between the ancient City of Oxford and the towns of Bicester and Banbury.

The two villages are situated in North Oxfordshire, in the Cherwell District, where the A4260 Oxford to Banbury Road crosses the B4095, which runs from Bicester to Witney.

They are close to former RAF Upper Heyford, where many British and American servicemen were based since the first wartime use of flying machines.

Rich in history

The village has been inhabited since Roman and Saxon times, and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. While our SAVA records do not go back quite this far, they offer a fascinating snapshot of the way we lived and worked in previous centuries.

The area is rich in national and local history, having been a centre of intrigue since the times of Henry VIII, Thomas More and Thomas Cranmer (who was burned at the stake in the nearby City of Oxford), and again later in the English Civil War of the 1600s.

Houses within the village envelope have been owned by other famous and distinguished families (see archive items on 'The Grange'), one of whom had a family member who signed the Death Warrant of King Charles.
